TRIP ITINERARY

Step into the real-life world of Downton Abbey on this unforgettable day trip from London. Visit the iconic Highclere Castle, explore the charming Cotswold village of Bampton (Downton Village), and walk the historic halls of Oxford University, with insights from our expert local guide.

With the recent release of Downton Abbey 3: The Grand Finale, this is your chance to visit the real-life locations that brought the story to life, and experience the magic of Downton Abbey in person.

Oxford – The City of Dreaming Spires

Begin your day in the historic city of Oxford, home to one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities. With its ivy-covered walls, magnificent chapels, and centuries-old colleges, Oxford has long inspired scholars and filmmakers alike. Enjoy a guided walking tour through the city’s picturesque streets before taking some free time to explore or enjoy a traditional pub lunch at one of Oxford’s many historic inns.

Bampton – The Village Behind Downton Abbey

Your next stop is Bampton, a picturesque village in the Cotswolds featured in the TV series as Downton Village. Here you will see many familiar locations including the village church, Matthew Crawley’s mother’s house, and the hospital, which is actually the public library. Residential homes used as the post office and local pubs also bring the village to life on screen. Inside the library, you can visit the Vesey Room, home to the Bampton Archive and various local exhibitions. There is also the opportunity to purchase Downton-themed memorabilia created by local artists, such as cards, prints, mugs, and books.

Highclere Castle – The Iconic Home of Downton Abbey

The final and most anticipated stop is Highclere Castle, the magnificent country seat of the Earls of Carnarvon and the primary filming location of Downton Abbey. Designed by Sir Charles Barry, who also created the Houses of Parliament, this grand estate brings the world of Downton to life.

Explore the lavish state rooms featured in the series, including the grand main hall, library, and drawing rooms. After your tour, you can stroll through the stunning Capability Brown–designed gardens or relax with tea and cake in the castle’s café.
